WHAT IS CBD OIL?
“CBD” is short for Cannabidiol, one of the 104 chemical compounds known as “cannabinoids” that are found in the cannabis plant, also known as the marijuana plant. When suspended in oil, CBD is a popular natural remedy for a number of symptoms and conditions.
While derived from the cannabis plant, CBD oil is not the same thing as concentrated marijuana. Marijuana also contains the cannabinoid Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the well-known psychoactive chemical responsible for the marijuana “high.”
CBD is not a psychoactive agent, and CBD oil does not contain THC. This makes it an attractive alternative for patients who want to enjoy the tested medicinal benefits of cannabis without the mind-altering effects of marijuana.
To create the product, CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant. It is then diluted with a carrier oil like hemp seed or coconut oil.
Building on marijuana’s 4,000-year history as a treatment for pain, CBD oil has been shown in rats to reduce surgical pain when injected, and to reduce inflammation and sciatic nerve pain when administered orally. Human trials have shown promise treating pain related to arthritis and multiple sclerosis.
CBD has also shown promise as a treatment for anxiety and depression. Its anti-inflammatory properties and sebum inhibition may reduce acne. It may also treat insomnia, improve cognitive functioning, and benefit heart health. It may also be useful in treating psychosis, diabetes, and substance addiction.
CBD has proven to be an effective supplemental treatment to reduce nausea, vomiting, and pain for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Lab tests have shown promise in the ability of CBD oil to fight cancer itself. Test tube experiments have shown some evidence of concentrated CBD causing cell death in breast cancer samples, and to curb the spread of breast cancer in lab animals. Further testing is required before these effects can be verified.
Compared to common pharmaceutical treatments for these conditions, CBD is not addictive, reducing the propensity for abuse.
WHAT IS A CBD VAPE?
You may have been curious to hear someone refer to a “CBD vape.” Short for “vaporization,” vaping is the practice of heating an oil, wax, concentrate, or other material until it becomes a steam-like vapor. The vapor can then be inhaled into the mouth or lungs. No flame is employed, reducing the number of harmful chemicals that enters smoke through combustion as with a typical cigarette or pipe.
Vape enthusiasts may enjoy the flavor of certain oils and use them as aromatherapy; others may seek beneficial effects or sensations from chemical compounds contained in the material. When vapor enters the lungs, vaporized compounds can pass through the lung alveoli directly into the bloodstream. This allows the patient or user to experience the desired effect much more quickly than through oral ingestion.
CBD oil can be vaporized like other vape-friendly compounds. Some users choose a large “desktop” vaporizer that plugs into the wall and allows them to customize their vapor. Oil may be bought in bulk and portioned into the desktop vaporizer as needed for the session. A desktop vaporizer may be paired with a “balloon” valve that allows the vapor to be collected in a large plastic bag. The vapor in the balloon will remain potent for hours or even days.
Gaining popularity, however, are “vape pens,” also known as “e-cigarettes” or “e-cigs.” These portable, handheld vaporizers work roughly the same way, activating a heating element with a battery and passing the material through an atomizer, which creates vapor that the user can inhale through the mouthpiece just like a cigarette.
WHAT IS A CBD CARTRIDGE?
With e-cigs becoming commonplace, inhaling vaporized CBD oil through an e-cig is appealing to potential users. For this reason, dispensers provide cartridges pre-loaded with CBD oil.
These cartridges resemble small glass vials, usually transparent so you can monitor when your oil is close to being depleted. The cartridge has a mouthpiece and contains an atomizer that heats the oil into vapor as you inhale through it. All you need now is a battery to power that atomizer. This isn’t included with your cartridge. Taken together, the cartridge and the batter actually form the e-cig.
E-cig batteries are available wherever smoking and vaporizing products are sold. A variety of brands and configurations are available, but nearly all of them connect to the oil cartridge with a standardized 510-thread screw attachment. This means that almost any CBD cartridge can be attached to almost any battery. Most cartridges containing other vape oils use the same threading, so you can mix and match cartridges and batteries to find the right ones for you. Most batteries come with a USB charging attachment so you can reuse it multiple times. Depending on the quality of the battery, however, it may last a long time or fail fairly quickly.
ADVANTAGE OF CBD VAPE WITH A CBD CARTRIDGE.
Inhaling CBD vapor through an e-cigarette cartridge is an easy entry point for users new to vaporization. There is no complex process to learn. Cartridges screw onto almost any battery.
Batteries are often operated with a single button, with multiple presses activating the different functions and a color-coded LED light indicating the pen’s charge and heating status. Compared to bulky desktop vaporizer assemblies, vape cartridge batteries are affordable, with options to fit every budget.
CBD cartridges are portable, fitting easily into most purses, backpacks, or carrying cases. This is invaluable for users of CBD oil to treat anxiety or insomnia while on the go. Make sure to be aware of laws affecting CBD oil before transporting your e-cig cartridge to a new jurisdiction.
Using a CBD cartridge in an e-cig allows users to benefit from the health impact of CBD without the carcinogens and mind-altering effects associated with marijuana smoke, which not everyone enjoys or appreciates. Vaping is safer than smoking, containing no tar or ash. It does not contaminate the environment with noxious odors and allows the user to control the intake of vapor to suit his or her comfort level.
Most of all, using a CBD cartridge allows the user to take a therapeutic hit of vapor anytime, anywhere, and to feel the effects quickly.
